Monthly Coach Highlight – Dan Kayser, Business Coach
This month, we sat down with Business Coach Dan Kayser to talk about his journey through the trades, what brought him to Nexstar, and what he cares about the most.
Q: When and where did you get your start in the trades?
A: I started at Apollo Home in Cincinnati, OH as a warehouse employee at 20 years old. My job was to deliver parts and clean up the shop. We called the position PAC, which was short for “Parts and Cash;” we often joked it was actually short for “Pick up and Carry.” This position exposed me to the world of HVAC, which led me to become a journeyman. I later obtained my Master’s license and pursued a management and leadership career at Apollo.

Q: What brought you to Nexstar?
A: After 20-plus ears at Apollo Home, I had achieved my mission: I had quite literally gone from the most entry-level role available there to leading the entire organization! We had been Nexstar members since 2012, and I had directly experienced the impact that strong coaching and strong processes had on the business and myself. I felt as if I were searching for a noble cause, and I found it with Nexstar!
Q: Is there someone who inspired your journey into the trades?
A: I had so many people inspire me along the way. I’ve been very lucky to have had strong coaches and mentors throughout the course of my career, and I often think about what I’ve learned from them. There was an owner and CEO that taught me about the importance of a vision, and a CFO who taught me how to tell a story with numbers. There was also a business coach who challenged me to elevate my business expectations and about how much opportunity was available in the market.

Q: What are some of the career milestones that have been important in guiding you to your role as a coach?
A: That’s a big question! I think it’s all cumulative. Experience shapes our lens and forms us as individuals. I’d say the two career stops that mattered most were my time in operations management, and then later as the president and general manager of the organization. In an operations capacity, I had to adopt and refine best practices to maximize our results. As a president and general manager, I truly recognized the importance and necessity of building a strong team and achieving results through others. This meant that I had to adjust to a more “coaching and challenging” role from a directing, or “doing” role. The combination of those two roles and skillsets led me to where I am today.
Q: What does your typical day look like as a coach?
A: Lots of member time! I like to sweep through my emails and requests each morning and afternoon, but I keep most of my day available to the membership. There are times when I’m privileged enough to participate in internal initiatives, so I’ll carve out time to collaborate and work on projects as needed.
Q: What’s the best part of your job and why?
A: The best part of my job is watching a member grain traction and growth after implementing a piece of coaching or training from Nexstar. That’s true impact.
Q: What’s one of your greatest superpowers?
A: I often joke that I can see the future! I’m a very logical thinker. If a plan is well-developed and well-executed, the results can be very predictable. Unfortunately, the same can be true for a poorly executed plan or initiative.
Q: What do you do to relax when you’re not at work?
A: I love hanging out with my wife, Brenna, or going out to grab a nice meal. With that said, I’m a bit restless by nature. If I’m off work and the weather is nice, I’m probably out cutting grass or working around the house. I play in a friendly and competitive monthly poker tournament and have gotten pretty good at that!
Q: What are some of your passions?
A: Aside from being passionate about the trades? I’m a serial hobbyist, which means my interests tend to go in fits and spurts, but never really change. I love photography, being outdoors, camping, shooting sports, tinkering with cars, and gardening.
